This website investigates British cases reported between 1750 and 1950.

British serious crime holds a particular fascination for me. I examine murders, suspicious deaths, criminal conspiracies and other cases that attracted newspaper attention. My principal aims are to investigate the surviving evidence, compare different reports and distinguish documented facts from later retellings.

Contemporary newspaper reports preserve valuable accounts of these events as information emerged. They identify victims, defendants, witnesses, officials and other people involved, while also recording the social circumstances surrounding each case.

I have researched and written about British murders for many years, both before and after the widespread development of the internet. No two cases are the same; each has its own evidential problems, personalities and historical setting.

Murder Research is an independent investigation service established online in 2003. Over the years, I have investigated and written about numerous British murder and serious criminal cases covering the period from 1750 to 1950.

As today, historical media coverage could be affected by editorial sensationalism, speculation and public prejudice. These elements are themselves revealing, but they must be separated carefully from verified evidence.

For much of this period, investigators did not have access to modern forensic methods. Blood analysis, fingerprint examination and other scientific techniques either did not exist or were at an early stage of development. DNA profiling would not become available until much later.

Some historical convictions continue to raise serious questions. Evidence could be incomplete, circumstantial or interpreted according to the limited scientific knowledge and legal assumptions of the period.

Illustrated Police News – Saturday 21 October 1893

It is often said that dramatic murder cases helped sell newspapers, and this was certainly evident during the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian periods.

Newspapers and popular publications sometimes presented extraordinary and exaggerated accounts intended to excite or frighten their readers. Such coverage must be read critically, but it provides a fascinating record of contemporary attitudes.

Dangerous Justice – Flimsy Evidence

Some historic murder cases contain the disturbing possibility of a wrongly accused person becoming a convenient suspect. People could be convicted and sentenced to death on evidence that would receive far greater scrutiny today. In other cases, possible offenders may have escaped prosecution because suspicion was directed elsewhere.

Investigators relied heavily on witnesses, circumstantial evidence and personal testimony. For much of the period, scientific methods were extremely limited, and even distinguishing human blood from animal blood was not always possible.

Staffordshire Advertiser – Saturday 9 November 1799

Newspaper reports show that violent crime and suspicious deaths formed a persistent part of public life.
